How to calculate the right number of panels for your system:

1. DETERMINE YOUR ENERGY USAGE

The first step to determining how many solar panels your home needs is to understand how much energy your system needs to produce. Take your total usage over the past year in kilowatt-hours (kWh) – this figure can be found on your utility bill or online account.

2. DETERMINE YOUR AREA’s PRODUCTION RATIO

The same solar system will produce differently in different areas, based on its exposure to the sun. The average production ratio in the United States ranges from 1.3-1.6. If your roof is in a sunny state, like California or Texas, with little shading, take the higher end. If you’re located somewhere with less sun exposure and more cloudy days, like most northern states, take the lower end.

3. FACTOR IN YOUR PANEL WATTAGE

The final piece of the equation is the wattage of the panels you plan to use. Once you have all three of these numbers handy, simply plug them into this formula:

Number of panels = production goal / production ratio / panel wattage

Take a look at this example for a California homeowner, who wants to offset 100% of their 10,000 kWh annual usage, has a roof fully exposed to the sun (meaning a production factor on the high end of average, at 1.6) who is considering a system with 450 watt panels.

Number of panels = 10,000 / 1.6 / 450
Number of panels = 13.8 panels

In this case, a 14-panel system would offset just over 100% of the homeowner’s annual usage.

4. Adjust formula BASED ON GOALS

Once you have an understanding of the number of panels you need to offset your current usage, consider additional variables and circumstances.

For example, if you plan to purchase an EV or install a pool, you may want to oversize your system to account for the additional usage those will incur. Alternatively, if your roof cannot accommodate the number of panels needed to meet your production goals, you may want to consider a higher – wattage panel.

How can i get a tesla powerwall and be NEM 3.0 Compliant?

Tesla Powerwalls: Your Gateway to Energy Independence and Savings Harnessing the Power of the Sun with Tesla

In the ever-evolving landscape of renewable energy, Tesla Powerwalls stand as a beacon of innovation, empowering homeowners to take control of their energy consumption and embrace a sustainable future. As California transitions to NEM 3.0, a new era of solar energy incentives has dawned, making Tesla Powerwalls an even more attractive investment for homeowners. Zoomin Solar, with its team of experienced Solar Zoomers, is here to guide you through this exciting journey, ensuring you reap the full benefits of solar power and Tesla’s cutting-edge technology.

Understanding NEM 3.0: California’s New Solar Energy Incentive

NEM 3.0, or Net Energy Metering 3.0, is California’s latest framework for solar energy compensation. It replaces NEM 2.0, offering a more equitable system for solar homeowners. Under NEM 3.0, solar customers receive credit for the excess electricity they generate and feed back into the grid, at a rate slightly lower than the retail rate. This encourages self-consumption of solar energy, reducing reliance on the grid and promoting energy independence.

How Tesla Powerwalls Enhance NEM 3.0 Benefits

Tesla Powerwalls, when paired with a solar system, offer a multitude of advantages that significantly amplify the benefits of NEM 3.0:

1. Energy Storage and Time-of-Use (TOU) Rates:

  • Peak Demand Management: Tesla Powerwalls allow you to store excess solar energy generated during the day, when electricity demand is low and rates are often cheaper. This stored energy can then be used during peak hours in the evening when electricity prices are higher.
  • Reduced Grid Reliance: By utilizing stored solar energy during peak hours, you reduce your reliance on the grid, potentially saving significant amounts on your electricity bills.
  • Time-of-Use (TOU) Rate Optimization: NEM 3.0 often incorporates time-of-use (TOU) rates, where electricity costs vary depending on the time of day. Tesla Powerwalls can help you intelligently manage your energy consumption, aligning it with lower TOU rates and further maximizing your savings.

2. Backup Power and Grid Independence:

  • Uninterrupted Power Supply: In the event of a power outage, Tesla Powerwalls can provide backup power to your home, ensuring that you stay connected even during grid disruptions.
  • Enhanced Energy Security: With Tesla Powerwalls, you become less reliant on the grid, reducing your vulnerability to power outages and fluctuations.

3. Increased Self-Sufficiency and Environmental Impact:

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: By generating and storing your own solar energy, you significantly reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner environment.
  • Enhanced Energy Independence: Tesla Powerwalls empower you to take control of your energy needs, reducing your reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable energy practices.

NEM 3.0 is the reason we need battery storage with our solar systems as of April 2024 in California Only

Great News!, several solar battery storage rebates and incentives are available that can reduce the price of a Tesla Powerwall installation.

The biggest incentive is the 30% federal solar tax credit, which can save thousands of dollars on energy storage systems like the Tesla Powerwall. A $16,800 Powerwall system would earn a $5,040 tax credit!

The following table outlines estimates how much different-sized Tesla Powerwall installations would cost after the federal tax credit:

Number of PowerwallsPowerwall system costPowerwall system cost after tax credit
1$16,800$11,760
2$22,700$15,890
3$28,600$20.020
4$34,500$24,150

There are also a variety of local and state rebates that can help reduce battery costs. One thing to keep an eye out for is virtual power plant (VPP) programs, which allow utilities to pay for access to homeowners’ batteries to reduce stress on the grid. Tesla is eligible for several VPP programs, and some of them earn Powerwall owners hundreds of dollars a month!
